Where Is Your F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions) Book?

by Bart Smith

What is a 4″ x 6″ mini-book?

This type of book is smaller than your regular sized book (i.e., 5.5″ x 8.5″, 6″ x 9″, 8.5″ x 11″, etc.). From the illustration below, you can tell how small it is compared to an 8.5″ x 8.5″ book …

Small books like this have several great advantages the bigger books don’t have. For example:

COST: If you buy enough books at once, you can get the price down to almost $1 per book. NICE! This allows you to give the book away (advertising expense) or sell it wholesale to groups who might buy it in bulk and hand it out to their audience members.

PURPOSE: Unlike larger sized books with higher printing costs that go on the market for sale, these books are perfect to either giveaway as a lead generator to upsell folks to a higher priced ticket item, such as seminar or coaching program, or to generate large profits when you speak to large groups who buy these types of books in bulk for some other purpose that addresses a topic in quick-time because it is a smaller book usually intended to be used for only a short period of time or duration.

SIZE: They’re small books, convenient to carry around with you and easy to transport, especially if you have to move 100 or more books with to a specific location. People like then because they are a fast read and keep around because they don’t take up any space.

EASY TO SHIP: Mini-books easily fit within almost any small package or envelope unlike larger books that require larger packaging.

WITHIN EASY REACH: Small books don’t take up too much room. If you wrote a book with quick tips, recipes, how-to’s, motivational tips, affirmations, inspirational quotes, etc., that book could be kept on someone’s desk, on the kitchen counter, in a drawer, by the bedside, in a purse or briefcase, etc.

FAST TO PRINT: As in, fast to write … then print! This is a small book, so you won’t be writing 100+ pages of a 5.5″ x 8.5″ (or larger) sized book. Instead, these books can be 20-30 pages, and even those pages are half the size as regular book size pages. This makes it easier to fill up with content and images versus the larger sized books.

Wouldn’t you agree those are some great benefits?

How can you make money with small books?

Granted, I just gave you a few ideas, but those were just the benefits of writing a book of this size. Now, here are some specific marketing and sales activities you could embark on to make money with a small book:

Lead Generator: Imagine running a (time/quantity limited) video ad campaign where you want to promote an upcoming event, coaching program or online membership website. I’ve done this many times in my career and with great success. You might say, “Just pay shipping and handling and I’ll send you, at no charge, this booklet that goes into the 7 secrets of my X-system that helps you gain X-benefits.” Now, let’s say you charge $7.99 for shipping and handling. The book costs you $1.25 to print, the envelope $.10 and postage $1.99 first class mail because the book is light enough and thin enough to ship in a small size envelope. Your profit left over is a nice $4.65 × 1,000 sales = $4,650 net profit. Not bad. That funds your seminar room for the 100 people who want to attend at $97 each for even more money in your pocket. Remember, as people order the book, get their eMail address to upsell them to other products. Now. I’m stretching a few numbers here, but you get the idea. Use a relatively cheap to print book like this combined with a FREE book-in-your-hand promotion tactic to win the confidence of prospects who only pay for shipping. Upsell them in the book to whatever you’re promoting and see what comes of it, right? Money in your pocket! This promotional idea can be used to sell seats at live events or sell your offline/online coaching/membership system, etc. The sky’s the limit. With a book in hand, people are reminded of the event because it sits on their desk or coffee table, or they carry it around with them on the planes, trains, buses … books are not turned off like computers are where there’s no longer any access to web pages or email.

Bulk Sales: Let’s say you get asked to speak before a large group and this is a paid speaking gig. Ask the host if they have extra money in their budget to purchase educational materials for the benefit of their audience members. If so, propose they spend an extra $300-500, for example to buy 50-300 books from you at a wholesale rate based on the number of people in attendance. Well, if you can buy the books at $1.25 and sell them for $2-3 a piece, then you just made an extra $200-$400 net profit on top of your speaking fee. Or, simply, sell the books at the back of the room for $3-5 individually and make a few extra bucks there. The point here is this — be prepared to sell books in bulk to numbers of people at a speaking event by pricing them very low (i.e., $3/book, $5/book, etc.). With this model, you should seek out to speak at at least one event per month for that extra income. How about weekly?

Easy Profits: I just mentioned a couple ways to make easy profits. Well, here’s another good example. Your low cost to print the book could be bundled with other products that you sell at a much higher price. Books have value in and of themselves., so, when you add them to other products or services, it also helps to sell those other products and services.

Classes, Workshops & Seminars: You can have an event that features a mini-book. Write a number of mini-books and you’ve got a lot of classes you could conduct. “Welcome to tonight’s class, based on the mini-book I wrote called, …”

Mini-Book Audio Sales: Record your mini-book for more money. Sell access to it on your website for $9 and make one sale a day for an extra $270 a month.

Mini-Book Coaching/Consulting: Maybe these mini-books floating around might motivate someone to hire you as their coach or consultant. You never know, unless you get your mini-book out there and advertise your coaching/consulting services inside the book.

How do you design a 4″ x 6″ mini-book?

The mini-book is like any book you might design, except you are limited in space to write content, which means your mini-book has well-defined tips, tactics, and more due the book’s size. For example, in WORD, you could set the Paper size to be 4″ x 6″ and the margins to be .25″. Then start writing within those guidelines. You’ll find writing a book this size goes pretty fast. Just try to keep your page count under 60 pages. You want to keep your printing costs under $2 per book and as close to $1 per book if you plan to buy books in bulk.

Unfortunately, Google documents don’t allow you to customize the page size below 5.5″ x 8.5″. So, in lieu of that, if you still wanted to write your book in a Google doc, perhaps change the margin to about 1.5″ (left/right) x 2″ (top/bottom) for 5.5″ x 8.5″ page size. That would at least let you feel like you’re typing/writing in a 4″ x 6″ mini-book.

In this way, when you turn your written work over to your book designer, he/she will be able to match what you did within their Affinity or Adobe InDesign files they will set up for your book. I’ll be honest — when you try this, you may not like it. The margins will be wider than you expect and you can’t really see where the page starts and ends because you cannot add guides. However, you try it and see what you think? Perhaps, writing your book in Microsoft Word is best for your needs.

Where can you print a 4″ x 6″ mini-book?

I’m glad you asked. Would you believe, KDP.com (Amazon.com) prints 4” x 6” book sizes? There was a time when they didn’t, but now they do! Just select “Custom” under Trim Size when adding your new paperback book title and then enter 4” (width) and 6” (height). Done!

Well, now that you know KDP can print your 4” x 6” book, here’s what you do next:

1. Using Affinity by Canva.com, you can lay out the interior pages of your 4” x 6” mini-book. When this Step #1 is done, you’ll know your final page count which is required for Step #2.

2. Go to KDP’s Print Cover Calculator & Templates web page to download a cover template you can use to design your 4” x 6” cover. Enter your book’s details and download the PNG template.

3. Using Affinity by Canva.com, you can design the front / back / spine cover for your 4” x 6” book based on the template you just downloaded from KDP.

4. Upload your interior manuscript and book cover PDF files to KDP for blessing and printing.

5. You can see how much your 4” x 6” book will cost you when you order Author Copies by going to KDP’s Printing Costs and Royalty Calculator and entering your book details. You can also set your retail price and see how much profit you’ll make when sold on Amazon.com
