Granted, I just gave you a few ideas, but those were just the benefits of writing a book of this size. Now, here are some specific marketing and sales activities you could embark on to make money with a small book:

Lead Generator: Imagine running a (time/quantity limited) video ad campaign where you want to promote an upcoming event, coaching program or online membership website. I’ve done this many times in my career and with great success. You might say, “Just pay shipping and handling and I’ll send you, at no charge, this booklet that goes into the 7 secrets of my X-system that helps you gain X-benefits.” Now, let’s say you charge $7.99 for shipping and handling. The book costs you $1.25 to print, the envelope $.10 and postage $1.99 first class mail because the book is light enough and thin enough to ship in a small size envelope. Your profit left over is a nice $4.65 × 1,000 sales = $4,650 net profit. Not bad. That funds your seminar room for the 100 people who want to attend at $97 each for even more money in your pocket. Remember, as people order the book, get their eMail address to upsell them to other products. Now. I’m stretching a few numbers here, but you get the idea. Use a relatively cheap to print book like this combined with a FREE book-in-your-hand promotion tactic to win the confidence of prospects who only pay for shipping. Upsell them in the book to whatever you’re promoting and see what comes of it, right? Money in your pocket! This promotional idea can be used to sell seats at live events or sell your offline/online coaching/membership system, etc. The sky’s the limit. With a book in hand, people are reminded of the event because it sits on their desk or coffee table, or they carry it around with them on the planes, trains, buses … books are not turned off like computers are where there’s no longer any access to web pages or email.

Bulk Sales: Let’s say you get asked to speak before a large group and this is a paid speaking gig. Ask the host if they have extra money in their budget to purchase educational materials for the benefit of their audience members. If so, propose they spend an extra $300-500, for example to buy 50-300 books from you at a wholesale rate based on the number of people in attendance. Well, if you can buy the books at $1.25 and sell them for $2-3 a piece, then you just made an extra $200-$400 net profit on top of your speaking fee. Or, simply, sell the books at the back of the room for $3-5 individually and make a few extra bucks there. The point here is this — be prepared to sell books in bulk to numbers of people at a speaking event by pricing them very low (i.e., $3/book, $5/book, etc.). With this model, you should seek out to speak at at least one event per month for that extra income. How about weekly?

Easy Profits: I just mentioned a couple ways to make easy profits. Well, here’s another good example. Your low cost to print the book could be bundled with other products that you sell at a much higher price. Books have value in and of themselves., so, when you add them to other products or services, it also helps to sell those other products and services.

Classes, Workshops & Seminars: You can have an event that features a mini-book. Write a number of mini-books and you’ve got a lot of classes you could conduct. “Welcome to tonight’s class, based on the mini-book I wrote called, …”

Mini-Book Audio Sales: Record your mini-book for more money. Sell access to it on your website for $9 and make one sale a day for an extra $270 a month. 

Mini-Book Coaching/Consulting: Maybe these mini-books floating around might motivate someone to hire you as their coach or consultant. You never know, unless you get your mini-book out there and advertise your coaching/consulting services inside the book.
